Join us for an evening celebrating The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece: Masterworks from the British Museum and explore ideals of beauty across time and cultures. Enjoy talks, readings, a lecture by NYU professor Joan Connelly, films, and a Creativity Challenge.

Explore line and form with artist Amie Adelman, associate professor of fibers at the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. Learn about her process, create your own work of art, and then add to a communal installation using thread! All materials provided, and all ages welcome.

Presented by the Boshell Family Lecture Series on Archaeology

Join Dr. Joan Breton Connelly, professor of classics at New York University and director of the NYU Yeronisos Island Excavations, Cyprus, for an exploration of the complexities of the ancient Greek culture that produced the iconic sculpture featured in The Body Beautiful.  From the social and political beliefs to the athletes trained for the Panathenaic Games and the Athenian navy, the Ancient Greek culture still lives on as one of the most influential societies in history.

Create your own distorted images in this drop-in workshop hosted by UT Dallas MFA student Spencer Brown-Pearn. Experiment with two methods of distortion, using scanners and manipulating image source information.

8:00 p.m., Atrium
Enjoy a blend of Greek and American music performed by LAAND, led by Andreas and Laura-Anna Mihalakeas. Andreas was born in Athens, Greece, and came to the United States in 1977. He performs on the bouzouki and guitar and has toured with various groups across the country. Laura-Anna is a singer and dancer who has performed for many years.

The great battle for love pits the Spartans against the Trojans, all for the love of Helen, Queen of Sparta, who was taken from her husband, Menelaus, across the sea. Based on Homer's great epic, Troy tells the story of Agamemnon and his army of 50,000 Greeks on 1,000 ships as they set off to the land of the Trojans to fight the unbeaten army and return their queen to her rightful throne. This film is rated R. (163 mins.)

LN_Schedule_ConcertsLate Night After Hours Music Showcase featuring Beauxregard
10:00 p.m., Atrium 
Hear a performance by Fort Worth group Beauxregard. They have just released their second album, Ghosts of the Gaslamp, an epic western and desert noir music experience. Their first full-length album, Gryphoemia, was an epic rock opera album with a range of styles from turn of the last century tin-pan alley to late 1970s electro-clash post-punk.

See a preview of The Line of Beauty That Runs Through, an original dance performed by Dallas Black Dance Theatre and choreographed by Nycole Ray. This part of the dance is in response to the marble statue of a discus thrower in The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece. We invite you to experience the full performance on Saturday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m.
