Learn more about artist Marc Chagall through talks, tours, films, and performances as we celebrate our newest exhibition, Chagall: Beyond Color. Stay late for the After Hours Music Showcase featuring Hunter Hendrickson.

Late Night Creations

Create an amazing headpiece based on works of art in the DMA’s collection during this forty-five-minute workshop led by Museum staff. Participants will be introduced to a variety of techniques to use in their creations. Space is limited to forty people per session. Materials will be provided and all ages are welcome.

Chagallism and the Moscow State Yiddish Theater
7:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium
Join Mel Gordon, Professor of Theater Arts at the University of California, Berkeley, for an illustrated lecture about Marc Chagall and his influence on the Moscow State Yiddish Theater (GOSET) and his work with other theater companies, including his designs for Aleko. Just when Yiddish-speaking audiences throughout Europe and North America were abandoning traditional Jewish entertainment venues, Chagall and Alexis Granovsky created one of the most innovative and successful theater companies in revolutionary Moscow. Attracting huge audiences and becoming the hub of Jewish cultural life in Russia, the Moscow GOSET was like nothing else .

Late Night Art Bytes: Steampunk & Dieselpunk 101

View the art of the Steampunk and Dieselpunk community. This hands-on display will feature images and objects from Steampunk and Dieselpunk enthusiasts from around the country and will give a visual of what these communities create and wear, and how they re-invent the world around us much like Chagall did with his works of art.

Join Olivier Meslay, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs and The Barbara Thomas Lemmon Curator of European Art, for a tour of this new exhibition.

Late Night Art Bytes Talk: Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and Marc Chagall
9:30–10:30 p.m. , C3 Theater
Join members of the Steampunk Illumination Society for a discussion of Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and Marc Chagall, whose fusion of contemporary with anachronism makes him a kindred spirit of both genres. Just like Chagall, Steampunk and Dieselpunk take the zeitgeist of the past, whether it’s the Victorian era of Steampunk or the Jazz Age of Dieselpunk, and combines it with postmodern sensibilities to create something new and unexpected.

Late Night After Hours Music Showcase featuring Hunter Hendrickson
10:00 p.m., Atrium
Dallas musician Hunter Hendrickson is a dynamic blues and rock musician. Hendrickson's first work, an EP titled Behind the Notes, was released in 2009 at the House of Blues in Dallas. Music critic Mario Tarradell stated, “He’s definitely a local artist to watch,” and he was recently nominated for the 2012 Dallas Observer’s Music Award for Best Blues Act and Best Instrumentalist.

Paris – The Luminous Years (2010)

Marc Chagall’s Paris was a storm of modernism, uprooting centuries of tradition in the visual arts, music, literature, dance, theater, and beyond. Spotlighting the now-famous key figures in the art world’s first international avant-garde movement, and tracing who came to Paris and how being in Paris transformed their work, this film features these moments of drama and history as recalled by those at the heart of it all, including Marc Chagall, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, and more. This film is not rated. (120 min.)

Marc Chagall: Profile of the Artist (2010)
11:00 p.m., C3 Theater
Upon discovering that he is living in the old studio of artist Marc Chagall in Paris, a young English painter’s curiosity is aroused and he sets off through France on the trail of the enigmatic artist. Made very shortly before Chagall’s death at 97 in March of 1985, this is the last film made about the artist during his lifetime and looks at his work through the eyes of a young artist. This film is not rated. (52 min.)
